Julie Andrews

Meet our Member of the Month, Julie Andrews, the talented blogger behind The Gourmet RD.

What was your original motivation for your blog? What keeps you motivated?

As a Dietitian and Chef, I want(ed) to offer delicious recipes that were simple enough for people to make at home, but are also good-for-you.  It keeps me motivated that people really like my recipes because they realize food can be delicious and healthful!  I also have a personal drive for my blog work because I love seeing my photographs improve, and I love trying new things like recipe videos.  It’s turning into a business, which is super exciting!  That means others enjoy my work, maybe as much as I do!

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Oh my gosh, don’t make me choose!  But I guess if I have to… mac & cheese!

What has been your biggest cooking disaster?

Ahh I don’t have many disasters, but when I was in culinary school, I had to make creme brulee for my final exam, and I had mastered it probably 50 times practicing. But during the test, my torch malfunctioned and my creme brulee ended up tasting like butane…. gross!  I’ll never forget that.

What’s your favorite Thanksgiving tradition?

I love shopping the day before Thanksgiving (no, not the day after!) with my family, and then getting all of the food ready for Thanksgiving.  I’m totally a traditionalist when it comes to Thanksgiving, which is funny because none of my food is really traditional.  So I make fresh bread, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, turkey (takes me 4 days!), fresh cranberry sauce, brussels sprouts with bacon, and my grandma’s pumpkin pie.  Ugh my mouth is watering.

What’s your eating strategy at Thanksgiving feasts?

I like to eat small portions of everything, then go back for seconds on turkey and stuffing with gravy.  I’ll wait a few hours before having pumpkin pie.  Even if I’m still miserable, I’ll eat it!  And then… leftovers.  Think pizza, balls with gravy dip and waffles…
